Adolescents and Substance Abuse

Adolescents Aren’t as Invincible as They’d Like to Believe…

Drug abuse, particularly of prescription drugs, is on the rise. Identifying signs of substance abuse among teens is the first step toward getting treatment.

Signs of substance abuse include altered sleep, change in appetite patterns, sweating, edginess, fidgety, mood swings— often physically and verbally violent, poor hygiene. An adolescent engaging in substance abuse may withdraw from friends and family and lose interest in activities they once found enjoyable.

Contributing factors to adolescent substance abuse may include insecurities and peer pressure. They are often unaware of the serious consequences that can occur, which leads them to take risks. Common risk factors include:

  • Family history of substance abuse
  • Depression, anxiety or ADHD
  • Early aggressive or impulsive behavior
  • Traumatic events such as abuse, head injury, a car accident or other trauma
  • Low self-esteem, poor coping skills
  • Academic failure
  • Lack of nurture
  • Feelings of social rejection
  • Recent break-up
