What are the Signs of Addiction?

Addiction is a chronic disease that progressively changes the reward center of the brain. Although compulsive behavior may involve gambling, shopping, or sexual behavior, usually when people talk about addiction it is in reference to alcohol and drug abuse. These substances will fundamentally make changes in the brain and affect its ability to manage dopamine and other neurotransmitters related to the brain’s reward system. Characteristics of addiction include uncontrollable behavior, compulsive thoughts, cravings, and withdrawal symptoms when the addiction is not satisfied.

Common Signs of Substance and Alcohol Addiction

  • Feeling tired

  • Loss of motivation

  • Social dysfunction

  • Performing poorly at work or school

  • Engaging in risky behaviors while intoxicated

  • Lying about using habits

  • Spending a lot of money on the substance

  • Compulsively taking the substance

  • Not being able to stop once taking the substance

  • Developing a tolerance, so one needs to use more and more each time

  • Getting aggressive or defensive when questioned about one’s habits

  • Thinking obsessively about the next dose

  • Worrying about one’s supply or the source of the substance

  • Experiencing signs of withdrawal when unable to get the substance

  • Stealing to get the substance

Signs that Indicate Substance Abuse in Adolescents

Teen users are at high risk of developing an addiction compared to adults. 9 out 10 people who meet the criteria for addiction admit to using alcohol or other drugs before turning 18.

  • Changes in appetite or sleep patterns

  • Extreme changes in physical appearance

  • Withdrawal from social activities or important events

  • Unexplained need for money or secretive spending habits

  • Sudden changes in friends or hang out locations

  • Increased personal or legal problems
