Switching Addictions

Substituting One Addiction for Another

It is not uncommon for people in recovery to switch their substance abuse for another type of addictive or compulsive behavior. These new activities may be less dangerous or harmful, but can still become a hurdle in the healing of the individual. Leaving them unchecked they may also cause a relapse in the addiction that was treated in the first place. As you are recovering, be mindful of how you look at other aspects of your life.

Food

Food addiction can result in both overeating or overdieting. It can become a problem both healthwise, but also because of negative feelings and feeling pity for oneself.

Sex

Some people in recovery seek out new ways to get a rush or increase their feelings of self-worth through increased sexual behavior and sexual risk-taking.

Caffeine

Caffeine is known to cause slight addiction and can easily be overconsumed. It may cause mood swings and difficulty with establishing a healthy sleep pattern, among other things.

Work

Having work that one enjoys is a great thing during recovery, but it should not be all-encompassing and totally define an individual's self-worth.

Nicotine

Overusing tobacco can become a problem for people in recovery, especially since it influences the same pleasure center in the brain as many mood-altering substances.

Gambling

Gambling addiction is a serious disorder and can interfere with recovery - be it cards, the lottery, dice, or betting.
